APRIL 30: BETRAYAL AND BOUNTY: SCANDALOUS PIRATES

Tales of the pirates Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet brought fears to the hearts of many colonists. Despite the fierceness of numerous buccaneers, some good came from pirating along the colonial coast. When three pirates were captured sailing down the Chesapeake Bay with wealth beyond the means of most seamen, they were sent back to England for trial. In exchange for escaping punishment, the pirates agreed to work and give their funds to a school that was being built which later became The College of William & Mary.
