Join us for our monthly series to 'step into the past' with vivid storytelling from dynamic historic character actors. Each month, a new interpreter will bring their compelling journey to life and respond to questions about the era in which they lived.
May 4: Deborah Sampson (December 17, 1760 - April 29, 1827) Deborah Sampson was a Massachusetts woman who disguised herself as a man to fight in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. For over two years, Sampson served under the name Robert Shirtliff, and her actual sex escaped detection despite many close calls. In this program, you will meet Deborah Sampson after the War as she gives one of her “public lectures” about her experience during the War. Hear her discuss how she hid her gender and removed a bullet herself to not risk detection, and how she received an honorable discharge due to her service.
